Sendmail Warns of Rogue Email App Attacks at 2013 SC Congress

Email Management Experts to Demonstrate Growing Security, Compliance and Cloud Migration Threats

Emeryville, CA—June 6, 2013—Sendmail, Inc. announced today it will demonstrate from the 2013 SC Congress the new and growing risks posed by email-generating systems and applications left unchecked in the enterprise.

“We’ve detected serious security and compliance risks posed by the growing volume of email messages being generated by all kinds of rogue systems and applications under IT’s radar,” said Sendmail Vice President of Marketing Barry Shurtz in advance of the conference. “It may sound like a minor issue, but these messages can wreak incredible havoc on the network and an organization’s ability to conduct business.”

Email generating systems and applications in the enterprise can number in the tens of thousands. Some are sanctioned and managed by IT organization, but many others rely on open mail relays, have hard-coded IP addresses, and contain custom code completely outside the visibility and control of IT. Such systems and apps, which include customer care notification, ERP and billing, system monitoring utilities, and even copy machines, can cause:

  • Errant applications creating email storm and internal DoS attacks on primary business email servers and DMZ systems
  • Messages bypassing corporate policy enforcement systems, putting sensitive data at risk, including intellectual property, security/IT information and confidential documents
  • Traffic spikes that hamper deliverability and business workflow of entire enterprise
  • Security threats and risks posed by email-to-cloud migrations
