Sendmail Sponsors New Osterman Research Report: “The Case for Outbound Content Management”
Industry White Paper Focuses on Critical Need to Manage Outbound Content

Emeryville, Calif., May 6, 2010 — Sendmail, Inc., the leading provider of reliable and secure email and messaging infrastructures, today announced the availability of a new Osterman Research white paper, co-sponsored by Sendmail, titled, The Case for Outbound Content Management. The research white paper focuses on the growing need to manage content that leaves an organization through email messages and attachments, social networking tools, instant messaging systems, collaboration systems and other venues. The white paper also provides an overview of the relevant solutions from industry providers, such as Sendmail, that help enterprises manage outbound content needs.

The Case for Outbound Content Management discusses in depth how email, instant messaging, text messaging, social networking and other tools are a double-edged sword for enterprises. While extremely valuable as a means of boosting employee productivity, generating revenue and creating brand awareness, these messaging tools also pose enormous risks if their use is not monitored and managed properly. The report further indicates that most organizations today have not implemented data loss prevention (DLP) capabilities, and as a result, have increased their risk of sustaining financial, reputation and revenue loss due to poor communication practices.

“A failure to monitor what leaves an organization can lead to disastrous consequences,” said Michael Osterman, founder of Osterman Research. “Corporate policies should be established to help employees understand how and when communication tools should be used, but training and automated systems are necessary to ensure compliance with these policies.”

The research white paper describes specific steps organizations can take to understand and avoid potential problems with managing outbound content, including suggesting an audit of the current state of electronic communications and social networking tools, establishing detailed and thorough policies, training, proper data management, deploying the right technologies and integrating messaging and security.

“In order to mitigate risks associated with managing various types of outbound content, enterprises should consider a unified approach when addressing complex problems of policy-based message handling,” said Barry Shurtz, director of Marketing, Sendmail. “Sendmail Sentrion® Message Processors help enterprises modernize their core messaging infrastructures with a single, message processing platform solution and reduce the risks associated with managing outbound content while saving money and reducing operating expenses.”
