“Organizations often have complex internal routing requirements necessitating an internal e-mail backbone.”

Sendmail Reports Impressive Results From Messaging Architecture Review Program
Team of Messaging Architects Help Global 1000 Companies Uncover Security Vulnerabilities and Identify Significant Infrastructure Cost Reductions

Emeryville, Calif., November 18, 2009 — Sendmail, Inc., the leading provider of reliable and secure email and messaging infrastructures, today announced the completion of over 250 Messaging Architecture Reviews conducted with Global 1000 companies interested in finding security vulnerabilities and discovering significant infrastructure cost savings from modernizing their email messaging infrastructures.

Offered as a professional service to large enterprise organizations, the Sendmail Messaging Architecture Review Program is a comprehensive review designed to evaluate a company’s existing messaging infrastructure. The reviews are conducted in conjunction with interviews with representatives of all department stakeholders from IT, Messaging, Security, Human Resources, Marketing, Sales, Finance and other functions that rely upon email for mission-critical communications with employees, customers and partners. The results of each study are then provided in a written report and executive presentation, and contain short and long term recommendations on how to optimize an enterprise’s messaging architecture.

With this program, nearly 85 percent of enterprises are discovering security vulnerabilities and scalability flaws that threaten email trust and reliability within their organizations. Over 93 percent of these enterprises have also discovered significant cost savings can be obtained from reallocation of existing budgets to combat threats by modernizing the way the messaging infrastructure manages email.

As a result of recommendations made from Messaging Architecture Reviews with Sendmail, leading customers from all industries have modernized their email infrastructure backbones resulting in a more secure, and less costly, messaging infrastructure. This list of customers includes:

  • 7 of the world’s largest 10 financial services institutions
  • 2 of the largest U.S. government agencies
  • The world’s largest telecom and technology providers

Conducted by Sendmail’s “Messaging Architects,” the world’s foremost leading team of SMTP experts, Sendmail’s Architecture Reviews are a key resource that cutting-edge IT leaders are using to gain substantial insight into their own infrastructures that only Sendmail can provide. Since 1998, Sendmail's messaging experts have gained experience implementing solutions for the world’s largest enterprise and government organizations and become trusted advisors in the development of SMTP master plan strategies.

“While conducting a Messaging Architecture Review with our Messaging Architects, many customers were surprised to find they had so many ‘point products’ deployed over the years that were actually hurting their ability to effectively manage growing email volumes, and creating more management complexity than necessary,” said Glen D. Vondrick, executive vice president and COO, Sendmail. “It’s not actually all that surprising though if you think about the evolution of email - historically, businesses have tactically reacted to the increase in spam, viruses, malware and content security requirements by simply adding products to the infrastructure to address problems as they arose without regard to the impact on outdated architectures.”

Enterprises today though faced with a tough economic climate are realizing this approach has had a significant negative impact on their operating expenses, and they’re looking for new ways to streamline IT operations while reducing costs.

“We have received a growing number of inquiries from clients who have already completed one or more waves of IT cost-cutting during the current fiscal year and are under pressure to cut costs even further. Many of these clients believe there are few, if any, major IT cost saving opportunities left for them to pursue,” according to the May 2009 Gartner report, Cost Cutting in IT: When to Use Zero-based Budgeting.

In an effort to further reduce IT spend, an impressive number of cost-conscious enterprises are taking advantage of Sendmail’s Messaging Architecture Reviews as an opportunity to assess various messaging trends in Cloud Computing, Virtualization of the Data Center, and determining how to separate core infrastructure functions from lower value applications. After having conducted previous rounds of IT cost-cutting measures, one Fortune 500 multi-national enterprise participating in Sendmail’s program moved to a hybrid architecture using a virtualized message processing platform for control of critical messages while also moving low-value filtering applications to cloud computing. By modernizing its messaging infrastructure with Sendmail, this enterprise was able to identify how to save over $3M in current year operating expenses.

“During these challenging economic times, as large enterprises continue searching for more IT cost-cutting avenues, our business has doubled due to our unique expertise in conducting Messaging Architecture Reviews,” said Vondrick. “A Messaging Architecture Review with Sendmail can help executives gain insight into their real costs and help organizations discover vulnerabilities, which can be remedied by using existing budgets to modernize the infrastructure and dramatically increase reliability and trust in email.”
