Only a formal assessment of messaging networks can determine the risks an organization faces.”

Sendmail Introduces New Message Processing Platform
Sentrion® Message Processing Engine 4.0 Provides New Framework, User Interface and Reporting Application for Modernizing Enterprise SMTP Email Backbone Infrastructures

Emeryville, Calif., August 31, 2009 — Sendmail, Inc., the leading provider of reliable and secure email and messaging infrastructures, today introduced the latest version of its Sentrion® Message Processing Engine - Sentrion MPE 4.0 - the foundation for the company’s high-performance Message Processors, which are available in virtual appliance (Sentrion MPV™), hard appliance (Sentrion MP™), blade server (Sentrion MPQ™), and as a SaaS solution (Sentrion Cloud Services™). Sendmail will provide live demonstrations of its Message Processor solutions beginning today through Sept. 3 at VMworld 2009 in San Francisco, booth #1438A.

Global 2000 organizations are being forced to look for new ways to address their messaging infrastructures as the requirements for email infrastructure, complex SMTP messaging needs, content protection, security, and network performance evolve at an ever increasing rate. Sentrion MPE 4.0 is specifically designed to address these complex requirements, combining a new centralized interface framework with optimized reporting and monitoring to help enterprise IT messaging teams modernize their messaging infrastructures and improve the efficiencies of their global SMTP email backbone.

“Email has become a mission critical communication channel for all businesses, yet most enterprise email backbone infrastructures are outdated and often overlooked by IT administrators,” said Greg Shapiro, vice president of engineering and CTO, Sendmail. “Sendmail’s Sentrion Message Processors are all about tackling the challenge of modernizing messaging infrastructures and addressing complex email requirements in order to increase the bottom line. Sentrion’s architecture and numerous deployment options give enterprises the flexibility to create a highly efficient SMTP backbone with a hybrid infrastructure using hard appliances, virtual appliances, blade servers and cloud services.”

Sentrion Virtual Message Processor (MPV) Receives VMware Ready Certification
Additionally, Sentrion Virtual Message Processor (MPV) has achieved VMware Ready Certified status after passing the extensive certification testing and meeting strict criteria defined by VMware. With Sentrion MPV for VMware environments, organizations receive all of the benefits of Sendmail’s high-performance Sentrion Message Processor’s secure messaging capabilities plus the additional benefits of a virtual appliance.

Unlike competing products, Sentrion is designed as a platform for SMTP email infrastructure which can easily be extended by adding email security applications (versus separate point products from different vendors) from Sendmail or other third parties through the industry standard milter interface. Sentrion applications are used at the Gateway for inbound protection from spam, viruses, denial-of-service attacks, phishing attacks and other malware. In addition to the inbound protection applications, Sentrion provides outbound protection applications for Data Loss Protection (DLP), regulatory compliance such as GLBA and HIPPA, and encryption. The innovative design of Sentrion also enables it to be used internally for policy and directory-driven email routing.

Butler Group Recommends Sendmail Sentrion Message Processors
In a recently-published technology audit from the Butler Group, the IT End User division of Datamonitor Plc and a leading provider of information technology research, analysis, and advice, Sendmail’s Sentrion Message Processors were commended for offering maximum flexibility to organizations.

Of the many product functions highlighted in the report, Butler lays particular emphasis on the benefits of Sendmail’s three protection layer approach: first an external protection layer to stop unwanted email, accept valid email as well as provide simple routing and delivery; then an internal policy layer to inspect messages and provide data leakage protection; and, finally, a management layer for internal policy enforcement and message routing.

“By contrast to many of its competitors, Sendmail Sentrion Message Processors provide features across a wide range of functionality,” said senior research analyst, Sue Clarke, author of the report. “In supplying its appliances in a number of configurations, Sendmail provides maximum flexibility to organisations, enabling them to select the option that is most appropriate to their requirements. Its policy enforcement capabilities make it an ideal solution for organisations in regulated industries that have strict compliance requirements.”

Sentrion MPE 4.0 Key Features & Benefits
The Sentrion MPE 4.0 release provides users with a platform to manage all inbound and outbound messaging application requirements, offering enterprises much lower operating expenses (OPEX) and a significant return on investment (ROI). Key new features of MPE 4.0 include:

  • Centralized Reporting and data aggregation with on-demand, template-driven reports, and customizable report execution. Reports are easily exportable to PDF, HTML and CSV formats.
  • System and Application Monitoring of the entire MPE, including hardware, OS and all MPE components. Monitors and reports on vital stats (CPU, disk space, queued messages), services and alerts that are fully configurable and compatible for integration into external enterprise monitoring services.
  • Full Configuration Version Control for tracking and managing all system configuration changes with support for full roll-back and configuration tagging. Provides for incremental configuration changes, and commits and deploys to all hosts with a single operation.
  • New Graphical User Interface consolidates the previous component-based interface segregation by collapsing the most critical Sentrion MPE components under a common UI framework. Additionally, users are now able to fully manage all hosts in a cluster from a single, centralized console, which allows for greater scalability and efficiency in administration.
