"Despite highly publicized data leaks, companies struggle to gauge what their risk exposure is.

Only a formal assessment of messaging networks can determine the risks an organization faces."

Sendmail Risk Assessment Program Allows Global Organizations to Protect Customer Privacy Data and Intellectual Property
New Program Demonstrates Actual Risks Occurring in Outbound Email
Emeryville, Calif. – December 06, 2006 – Sendmail, Inc., the leading global provider of trusted messaging, today announced the availability of its Risk Assessment Program to benchmark actual security and compliance risks found in outbound email. Global enterprises are using the Sendmail Risk Assessment Program to discover the gap between their company’s compliance policies – for example their customer’s privacy policy statement – and what is actually occurring in outbound email where an estimated 80 percent of compliance violations occur. The result is the ability to close the gap by enforcing compliance and security policies without impacting email quality of service or replacing email infrastructure.

There are more than 275 million corporate mailboxes in use and over 130 billion emails sent each day (Radicati Group). With over 60 percent of the world’s email being routed through Sendmail, the company warns the potential compliance and security risks associated with electronic disclosure are immense. In recent research sponsored by Sendmail (see: http://www.sendmail.com/company/news/20061113/?x=51 Report), only 43 percent of companies surveyed had a solution in place to stop outbound compliance threats. The Sendmail Risk Assessment Program is the first step an organization can take to prevent compliance violations in outbound email without replacing their current email infrastructure.

“For the last 25 years, Sendmail has been the cornerstone of a high-performance email infrastructure,” said Donald J. Massaro, president and CEO of Sendmail. “Compliance in outbound mail should be an embedded function of your email system; not an after-market after-thought. The Risk Assessment Program now allows global organizations to quickly get their arms around the compliance risks occurring in outbound email and prevent these risks by re-routing email according to a company’s corporate governance or privacy policy. The solution is desirable because at the end of the day the mail still gets delivered, but the risks contained in email have been dramatically reduced.”

The Sendmail Risk Assessment Program Process

The Sendmail Risk Assessment program is designed to measure an organization’s current compliance risk and begin to plan a long-term risk management strategy that will protect its brand, reputation and competitive advantage – without impacting the quality of service within the email infrastructure.

“We found the process extremely helpful in determining where potential risks existed within our messaging infrastructure and Sendmail quickly outlined key areas for improvement,” said a messaging architect within a large governmental defense organization, who, for security reasons, remains anonymous. “The Sendmail team was knowledgeable and extremely sensitive about our stringent security requirements. They helped us identify ways to stop confidential information from leaving our network in email. In the end, we trusted Sendmail’s recommendations because the program demonstrated their expertise with our legal department. We are now able to enforce the protection of confidential data in our high volume messaging environment and we didn’t have to replace or compromise our email infrastructure.”

During the assessment process, Sendmail pinpoints risks within the areas of security, and compliance, utilizing its 25-year heritage building messaging and operational best practices. The entire process is non-intrusive and is driven through an interactive workshop session with the key security, compliance and messaging decision stakeholders followed by a 48-hour analysis period that tracks the real compliance risks taking place in outbound email. Following the 48-hour analysis period, Sendmail’s findings and a roadmap to remediation follow in an executive report highlighting the violations and addressing the critical compliance, security and business stakeholder requirements. Once a company understands their risk, they can begin to apply policy management to begin preventing the inappropriate disclosure of sensitive data without making significant changes to their email infrastructure.
