Tracking Malware at its Worst – Commtouch Shares Study Findings

Over the past few months, a major shift has been seen in malware activity, with a significant climb in email-borne malware and the highest observed in over two years. After years of low-volume attacks, malware email outbreaks reached a new high of 25 billion messages in one day in August of this year and the average daily email malware was up 400%.

Sendmail is a proud partner of Commtouch, a leading security company and service provider with cloud-based Internet security services. A recent report by Commtouch, “Internet Threats Trend Report,” published in October, identified the huge outbreaks of email malware in Q3 2011, looked at compromised accounts, Facebook and other hot spots for malware.  For this report, Commtouch conducted a survey with end-users whose email accounts had been abused and the results (pdf)of the study indicate that 62% of users did not know how they were hacked, and that two-thirds of the hacked accounts were used to send spam or scams.  The study found that in Q3, there was an average of 93 billion daily spam/phishing emails sent.

Ultimately, their findings show a large shift in how spam is being distributed, and spammers are increasingly relying on legitimate webmail accounts that have been hacked or hijacked. In addition to Webmail accounts, Facebook has become prime territory for scammers. The use of these accounts for malware is expected to rise, and users should be careful when accessing these in public domains and protecting their passwords.

Have you been hacked in the past year? Tell us your stories in your comments below.

Email Fun Fact: Does the Pope Use Email? What about Homer Simpson?

Love it or hate it – there’s no debate that email has changed how we communicate today. It allows us to connect with friends, family and colleagues, but have you considered reaching out to some of your favorite TV characters or celebrities? Even people you may have thought weren’t active in the email world actually do indeed have their own addresses – and use them, too.

Technology is everywhere these days and everyone wants to stay connected, including Pope Benedict XVI. While it is unlikely you will receive a personal response, he does read, collect and route all his email.  If you’re so inclined, try emailing him directly and let us know the outcome in the comments below.

Ever wanted to email Homer Simpson, but didn’t know his address? chunkylover53@aol.com is an AOL screen name and address registered to none other than Matt Selman, one of the writers of the Simpsons. And for those of you die-hard fans that are wondering how you may have missed this clever little detail, Homer’s email address was revealed in the episode The Dad Who Knew Too Little. And, Doh!, if you get a response we hope you’ll let us know by commenting here.

It has also been said that Bill Gates got started with his email in July of 1982, when billg@microsoft.com was created. Your emails will be read by a person at Gates’ office, and may in fact be forwarded to Gate’s himself if they are intriguing enough.

Send your favorite stars an email and let us know the outcome in your comments below!

Sendmail’s Annual International Messaging Infrastructure Summit a Success!

It has been a busy month for us here at Sendmail! In addition to the news we announced in October, we are also thrilled about the outcome of our annual International Messaging Infrastructure Summit that just concluded. This year’s event was focused on, “Is Cloud in Your 2012 Forecast” and was packed with customers, partners and analysts from around the world, including EMEA, Japan and the Americas.

Attendees told us that they walked away with a better understanding of why enterprises require an email backbone even when moving email to the cloud and what Sendmail’s unique position is in the industry.  It was encouraging to hear that attendees found the presentations and information shared valuable enough to take home and relook at their email infrastructure and cloud strategy.

With customers such as ConocoPhillips sharing why they decided to work with Sendmail after conducting a messaging architecture review, to Fidelity who talked about how the Sentrion MPV platform plays a strategic role in modernizing message infrastructure costs and to Nokia, who discussed how they are working with Sendmail to ensure a complete messaging infrastructure solution. There was a wealth of knowledge and insight shared at the event.  It was also an honor to have Internet Research Group, Principal Analyst, John Katsaros, present findings from a recent survey IRG conducted to get a better understanding of companies email infrastructure plans.  Michael Osterman, President and Founder, Osterman Research, among other analysts were also present at the summit and all came together to discuss where the cloud fits in the typical complex messaging infrastructure of large enterprises.

We could not have had a successful event without the participation from our customers and partners and on behalf of Sendmail, I want to thank everyone that presented and attended the summit.

Be sure to check out the official press release here for more details on some of the customer presentations and insights from the summit.

We are looking forward to continuing to put together these events to provide the industry with the only true gathering of messaging professionals sharing insider knowledge from their experiences.

See you in 2012!

IRG Email Backbone Survey Results

If you’ve been keeping up with our news lately, you probably know that on October 13 and 14 we held our annual International Messaging Infrastructure Summit where we focused on “Is Cloud in Your 2012 Forecast?” Leading up to the event, Sendmail wanted to corroborate their own unique insights into the force and timing of some of the most significant drivers of IT and messaging of customers and other large messaging systems buyers. To do this, Sendmail worked with an independent research team to target IT professionals in large organizations in a survey conducted by the Internet Research Group (IRG) titled, “Email Backbone Survey.” Of those surveyed over 80 percent of the respondents were with companies with more than 1,000 employees, and 60 percent were in organizations with more than 10,000 employees. IRG covered areas such as:

Cloud computing

  1. Messaging as a Service (MaaS)
  2. Messaging as a component of application and service design

The survey focused primarily on testing the impact of different aspects of cloud computing on messaging. The results clearly show the importance of the shift and highlight multiple forms of the cloud, each with a different impact. From our perspective, some results of interest:

Companies with 10,000+ employees said 27% of their applications generate email

  • Nearly 70% of organizations surveyed use email deployment via “on premise” servers
  • Despite the buzz around the benefits of the cloud, more than 50% of organizations do not plan to move their email infrastructure onto virtual servers
  • The majority of organizations polled plan to keep their email backbone systems in house for the foreseeable future
  • More than half of the organizations surveyed had no plans to reroute email or adding a bulk email system

One of the key takeaways, and a message that we have heard ourselves from our own customers, is that messaging is a rapidly evolving application, with the influence of cloud computing alternatives, privacy and regulatory compliance, and the rise in application-generated email and the results we’ve seen here continue to back up the growing value of having an email backbone. In the journey to the cloud, enterprises are increasingly selecting email as one of the first applications due to its virtualized architecture, need for scalability, and per seat deployment model. However, enterprise email running on a public cloud may not be able to meet the enterprise requirements for availability, security, and performance. Harris and Sendmail have integrated enterprise-grade email and cloud infrastructure to produce a service designed for mission critical workflows.  This presentation reviews Harris’ Trusted Enterprise Cloud, the Harris Cyber Integration Center and how Sendmail Sentrion plays a critical role in delivering secure email in the cloud.  Harris will go into more detail in a presentation tomorrow.
