Application-generated email — Do you have it under control? Part 4

Case In Point Number 2

As promised, here is another example to help you more completely understand how Sentrion’s policy engine can add value within an organization’s SMTP application relaying infrastructure.

One of my Sendmail colleagues recently integrated a Sentrion MP solution for another one of our large financial customers. During the planning meetings that were held the question was asked: “how many applications are relaying SMTP email messages within your pre-existing infrastructure?” Surprisingly, the client responded, “I have no idea; it’s really out of control.

Sendmail’s recommendation to address the issue was to (again) integrate several Sentrion MP Appliances in front of the pre-existing internal application servers. Next, we configured a Sentrion policy to capture the following information for all inbound mail messages in real time:

  • The sender address
  • The recipient address
  • The source IP and Hostname of the Connecting Server
  • The amount of messages sent by each individual application per day

We then created a report that contained all the information above, which was subsequently utilized to track down each internal application owner. Additionally, the information was used to generate metrics regarding the volume of mail flowing through the application relaying channel.

The requirements surrounding email routing are becoming increasingly complex, which is a trend that is sure to continue. Therefore, having the capability to make real-time routing decisions through the use of a powerful and efficient policy engine is absolutely essential.

My next post on this topic will be “Denial of Service Protection — Prevent Rogue SMTP Applications from Impacting your Production SMTP Channel” Stay tuned, and please give me any feedback or comments you might have.
