DKIM Progress

DKIM has made some exciting progress in the last couple of weeks.

First, adoption rates have grown significantly in the past few months. Cisco’s Jim Fenton recently published a blog article on the topic. In the article, he shows that since mid-February, the number of messages coming to Cisco with valid DKIM signatures has tripled. As he notes, some of this is due to some of the larger mail providers, namely Gmail and Yahoo!, adopting DKIM signing practices. However, there is also growth in the number of domains employing DKIM signing. Read more about it in Jim Fenton’s blog.

Second, DKIM has progressed in the Internet Engineering Task Force
(IETF) standards process this week with the publication of RFC 5585: DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) Service Overview. Quoting from the RFC’s abstract, “This document provides an overview of the DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) service and describes how it can fit into a messaging service. It also describes how DKIM relates to other IETF message signature technologies. It is intended for those who are adopting, developing, or deploying DKIM.” The RFC is a must read for anyone involved with or considering a DKIM deployment. If you are not in either of those camps, you should be.
